Elli Egilsson aliasz AC BANANAS interjú / interview

A híres londoni illusztrátort és művészt Elli Egilsson-t ismertebb nevén AC BANANS-t június 17-étől megtekinthető atlantai ABV Galériában tartott kiállításáról, divatról, terveiről és tetoválásairól kérdeztük.

We asked famous artist and illustrator London based Elli Egilsson known as AC BANANAS about plans, tattoos, fashion and his recent exhibition in the Atlanta ABV Gallery wich can be viewed from the 17th of June.

WeAre: Mesélj egy kicsit magadról és arról, hogy az 'AC BANANAS' honnan jön...

AC: Elli Egilssonnak hívnak, de az emberek inkább AC BANANAS-ként ismernek.

Az AC BANANAS egy művésznév, ami rajtam maradt az évek múlásával, csak ennyi. Eredetileg izlandi azaz reykjaviki vagyok, de Angliában, Londonban élek. Hacney Central-ban élek és dolgozom, a stúdióm csak pár percre van az otthonomtól, úgyhogy most leginkább E8 gyerekként ismernek, már akik értik, hogy ez mit jelent.

WeAre: Látom, sok tetoválásod van. Mondd, mindegyik mögött van jelentés?

AC: A legtöbbnek mélyebb jelentése van, mint valami véletlenszerű kínai jelnek, amit csakúgy kiszúr az ember, igen, és van amelyik személyes.Sok tetováló barátom van és mindig csodáltam ha valakinek kék vér folyik az ereiben, de ez jóval több ennél, ez egy életstílus inkább mint hobbi, trend vagy csak egy külső, de hé, én már csak ilyen vagyok!

WeAre: A művészetedből élsz?

AC: Ehem... igen. Sok grafikát csinálok DJ-k számára, bandáknak, divat márkáknak és cégeknek így a saját főnököm vagyok és tisztességesen megélek abból amit szeretek csinálni.

WeAre: Milyen stílusba sorolnád a munkáidat?

AC: Sötét, gyönyörű, részletes, zavaros és szimbolikus.

WeAre: Hogyan jött az ötlet, hogy az atlantai ABV Galériában tartsd a kiállításodat és milyen kapcsolat fűz hozzájuk?

AC: Az ötlet, hogy ott tartsam a kiállítást tavaly decemberben jött, amikor Miamiben jártam az Art Basel-en. Jó ideje ismerem már Greg Mike-ot, a galéria tulajdonosát és alapítóját és ledumáltuk. Attól a naptól fogva növesztem a szakállam és szétdolgoztam magam, hogy beindítsam a dolgot.Tavaly júniusban elmentem Atlantába a nyitó ünnepségre és, hogy egy kicsit pihenjek, a
megnyitó hatalmas siker volt és meg kell mondjam, hogy Atlantának hatalmas szíve van, néhányszor már jártam ott korábban, az egyik kedvenc városom, az biztos. Az utazás többi része arról szólt, hogy tonnányi füvet szívtam, bekészültem a melegben, megkeresem régi cimborákat és újakkal ismerkedtem meg, AR15-ös félautomatákkal és Magnum 357-esekkel lövöldöztem egy
lőtéren a legelborultabb barátaimmal... a tökéletes utazás!

WeAre: Tervezed egyáltalán, hogy Európában bemutasd ugyanezt a kiállítást?

AC: Lehetséges, de még meglátom, már a festmények harmadát eladtam, szóval lehet, hogy új sorozatba kell kezdenem, de az a terv, hogy legközelebb Reykjavikban és Londonban fogok kiállítani.

WeAre: Mi inspirál a divat terén, illetve abban, hogy miket hordasz?

AC: Hangulat függő, hogy mit veszek fel. Ha ingerlékenyen ébredek death metal cuccot veszek fel valami durva bakanccsal, haha. Carri Munden (Cassette Playa) barátommal osztom meg a stúdiót, aki egy elképesztő tervező és sok cuccát hordom simán azért mert menő! De általánosságban azt mondanám, hogy a város inspirálja, hogyan öltözködöm, az a koszos, szürke, grungos London mindig felkelti az érdeklődésemet.

WeAre: Tell me a little about yourself and where 'AC BANANAS' comes from..

AC: My name is Elli Egilsson but people might know me better as AC BANANAS. AC BANANAS is just an alias, an artist name that has stuck with me over the years, that's all. I'm originally from Reykjavik, Iceland but I live in London, U.K. I live and work out from Hackney Central, my studio is just a few minutes away from where I live so I'm pretty much known as the E8 kid these days to those that know what that means.

WeAre: I can see you have a lot of tattoos, tell me is there a meaning behind each one?

AC: Most of them have a deeper meaning than just a random chinese symbol out of a flash yes and some of them are personal. I have a lot of friends that are tattooers and I've always admired the art of having blue blood running in your veins but it's more then that, it's a lifestyle more then a hobby or a trend or a look but hey, that's just me!

WeAre: Do you make a living from your artwork?

AC: Ermm.. yes. I do a lot of graphics for DJ's, bands, fashion brands and labels so ye I manage to be my own boss and earn a decent living from what I love to do.

WeAre: What style would you classify your work in?

AC: Dark, ugly, beautiful, detailed, messy and symbolic.

WeAre: How did you come about having your exhibition at ABV Gallery in Atlanta and what's your relation with ABV?

AC: I got the idea of having my exhibition there when I was in Miami for Art Basel last December. I've known Greg Mike the owner and founder of the gallery for some time now and we locked it down. From that day on I started growing my beard and worked my ass off to get the show running. I went to Atlanta for the opening reception last June and to take some time off as well, the opening was a huge success and I must say that Atlanta has a huge heart, I've been there a few times before, one of my favorite cities of all time for sure.The rest of the trip was pretty much me smoking tons of weed, getting waisted in the heat, both catching up with old friends and meeting new people and shooting some AR15 semi autos and .357 Magnums at the gun range with the gnarliest crew of friends.. the perfect trip!

WeAre: Are you planing on showing the same exhibition in Europe at all?

AC: I just might but I'll have to see, so far I've sold 1/3 of the paintings so I might have to start a new series instead but the plan is to exhibit next in Reykjavik and London for sure.

WeAre: What inspires you when it comes to style and what you wear?

AC: I wear things by the mood that I'm in. If I wake up grumpy I would wear some death metal shit with some gnarly boots haha. I share my studio with my friend and amazing designer Carri Munden(Cassette Playa) and I wear A LOT of her stuff simply because it's THE SHIT! But in general I would say it's the city that inspires the way I dress, that grimy grey grunge London has my attention at all time.
